Seventeen year old driver, Nick Cassidy, was crowned the winner at the New Zealand Grand Prix, after his main competitor, Mitch Evans, was let down by a vehicle malfunction.

Evans looked liked he was going to be in for a comfortable win, as he had been for the entire series. However, it was eventually revealed that it was an electrical fault which prevented the young driver for bagging himself the much-coveted title at this event. His Toyota Tatuus, which had performed well throughout the rest of the race, event veered off onto the grass and came to a slow halt, just a short distance from the finish line. Unfortunately for Evans, this was not an ordinary journey, when such a problem might have been quickly fixed by the AAMI or RAC Car Insurance within just a few minutes. It was, of course, a race which would have meant a great deal to Evans, due to the fact that he had been awarded the winning trophy just last year.

Although Evans would no doubt have been keen to bag himself the trophy for the second time in a row, he can rest assured that his defeat was not the result of poor judgement on his behalf. Onlookers were initially baffled by the problems, which did not occur until the 29th lap. However, Cassidy has been relatively consistent throughout the race, and it was little surprise that he came through to win after Evans was forced to drop out of the competition.

For Cassidy, his win is likely to be very welcome, despite the technical issues suffered by his main competitor. Cassidy came in closely behind Evans’ win at last year’s event, and was no doubt keen to avoid finding himself in much the same position this time around.
