McLaren marked the 40th anniversary of the death of team founder Bruce McLaren on Wednesday at their Woking headquarters. McLaren, who won four Grands Prix, died on June 2, 1970 while testing a McLaren Can-Am car at Goodwood. The entire company gathered outside the McLaren Technology Centre for a minute’s silence during the afternoon.
Lotus have announced a trio of new appointments to their technical department. Mark Smith will become the team’s technical director, working under the direction of chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne, following the end of his notice period at his current team Force India. Lewis Butler will join as Lotus’s chief designer, whilst Marianne Hinson will become head of aerodynamics.
Just days after clinching second place at the Turkish Grand Prix, McLaren’s Jenson Button took time to reflect on his title-winning success of 2009 on Wednesday, as he was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace in London. World champion Button, who took the title driving for Brawn GP, was named in the Queen’s New Year Honours list.
Sunday’s Turkish Grand Prix saw Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hulkenberg struggle home to 14th and 17th places respectively for Williams. Although a marked improvement on their double retirement at the Monaco race, it was a disappointing result for the British team, who are currently seventh in the constructors’ standings.
