Bridgestone say the revised Silverstone circuit will be even tougher on tyres than the previous layout – which was already one of the hardest on the calendar for tyre wear. Director of motorsport tyre development Hirohide Hamashima said: The track was previously one of the most severe for the tyres in terms of layout and circuit roughness on the calendar. The new layout, if anything, makes it more punishing, and certainly too severe to bring our super soft compound.

The second day of the Goodwood Festival of Speed saw Formula 1 drivers past and present driving a selection of spectacular racing machines. World champion Jenson Button drove Alain Prost’s McLaren which won the 1986 world championship while Mark Webber demonstrated last year’s Red Bull. Bruno Senna drove his uncle’s last McLaren and HRT team mate Karun Chandhok was at the wheel of Keke Rosberg’s championship-winning Williams.
The Goodwood Festival of Speed begins today and there are over 50 F1 cars present celebrating the 60th anniversary of the first world championship season. The picture collection below show the F1 cars’ first run up the hill this morning in front of a packed crowd. Circuit testing during an F1 season has been almost entirely banned since the start of last season But now several prominent figures in F1 have voiced a desire to bring back in-season testing in the near future.
Peter Sauber hailed Kamui Kobayashi’s performance in the European Grand Prix as “amazing”. The Japanese driver claimed seventh place after pulling off two overtaking moves in the final two laps, one on Fernando Alonso . The team owner said: I can only think of one word for it – amazing! I was obviously thrilled by his two overtaking moves at the end of the race, but what impressed me most was how Kamui mastered his long stint on the hard tyres.
The Formula One Teams’ Association expects to reduce carbon emissions in the sport by 12.4% by 2012.
Having pilloried the European Grand Prix stewards in the 48 hours following the race, Ferrari have begun to tone down their criticism of Sunday’s event. Fernando Alonso was first to take a step back from his earlier criticism of the race as “manipulated”, saying “we should talk about it together in a calm way, to ensure that things like this do not happen again.” Alonso said : We were particularly unlucky in terms of the timing of when the safety car appeared on track. It would have only needed a few seconds more or less to totally change our race.
Karun Chandhok had a good weekend, out-qualifying his team mate and enjoying a largely trouble-free race.
